Spiders - are the ideal machines created for silent and instant kill. Patient and calculating, Arachnidan (for this class belong all spiders) weave their murderous network, crises-crossing invisible sticky threads all the land. 30,000 species of spiders live side by side with man in his home, his business holdings, as well as in each forest, field, and pond. If a man could imagine at one time all the surrounding spiders, probably would have gone mad with terror or ill arachnophobia at the same moment.

Did you know that the recluse spider bite can cause fatal skin damage and even death? It is caused by the single bite of the brown recluse spider, one of the only 4 known species of dangerous spiders in the Unites States. Native only to US Southeastern and Midwestern states, the brown recluse spider is characterized with a violin pattern on the back of its cepalothorax. These non-hairy spiders with colors ranging from brown to yellow have only six eyes, which gives them the genus Loxosceles.

As with its name recluse, these spiders are known to be non-aggressive and lives in dark, uninhabited places like attics, basements and closets. They only bite when threatened or when they are pressed up hard against the human's bare skin.

Recluse Spider Bite

Although some people experience minor burning sensation after being bitten by the recluse spider, most of the time they go unnoticed and symptoms only appear after 2-8 hours. Common symptoms include: Severe pain and itching at the bite site, vomiting, high fever, muscle pain, blistering, redness and firmness of skin. Usually, the treated area will heal and will cause no scars but in rare cases, necrotic lesions would appear, causing necrosis or death of skin tissues.

There are reported deaths caused by the recluse spider bite especially on young children below 7 years old and it is believed that their bite can cause severe reactions like necrosis. However, recent theories belie the fact that the spider bite is the main cause of the fatalities. Many arachnologist and entomologist believe receiving a bite from brown recluse spider is rare even if you have them as pets.

Moreover, many people share false stories and photos related to the brown recluse spider bite. They are actually caused by conditions like pyoderma gangrenosum and necrotizing bacteria. Misdiagnosis is also an underlying factor for such untrue stories, like allergic reaction to medication, infection, Lyme disease, diabetic ulcer and many others. Treatments to brown recluse spider bites are even simple, as 90% of it do not need medical attention and can be cured even without the doctor's prescription. The most common of it is the RICE therapy or Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.

In the end, it doesn't imply that we should ignore the basic rule of safety and avoidance. May it be spiders or any other insect; they should be respected and should not be harmed. Not unless if you want to get a recluse spider bite, in which case the consequences are yours to burden.
